CableDEV – the Next Chapter in Cable’s Outreach to Future ITV App and Service Developers

Welcome to CableDEV, the new name of the OCAP/EBIF Developer Network (OEDN). We’ve changed our name – but not our focus on coordinating resources to bring the tools and software necessary for students to learn how to build and test ITV applications and services at US universities.

 

What has changed is that CableDEV is no longer tied exclusively to supporting education efforts around Enhanced TV Binary Interchange Format (EBIF) or the Open Cable Application Platform (OCAP – also known by the consumer-facing name “tru2way”).

 

CableDEV realizes that the ways in which we watch and consume television content – and the applications we use to discover, comment and participate in the experience – are changing and evolving rapidly. We live in a world where an application that may start with an experience on a TV – could then shift that experience to a companion app running on an iPad or Android tablet. As of this writing – at least a dozen TV shows have their own “companion” iPad applications, serving as both stand-alone apps and as interactive experiences, synced to the live show. Cloud-computing, web services, mobile devices, tablets and changing consumer expectations and behaviors have all re-factored the equation of what interactive television means, and perhaps more importantly – what it can be.

 

In light of all these fundamental shifts in the landscape, we decided that the name we started with in October 2007 had served its usefulness, but we needed to plan for the years ahead. As a cable-industry initiative, it was only fitting that we call that out – as well as our commitment to developers – especially the next generation of developers for cable.

 

CableDEV is more than just a name-change, but the full-extent of our expanded direction will unfold as 2011 progresses. More than anything, we want to invite you in the conversation – to get your feedback on how we can build on the success of the work we’ve done with Ball State University and bring that to other schools.

 

Again, welcome to the new CableDEV – outside the box and ready for what’s next.
